Strategically located in
the western part of South Carolina, Aiken is within 3 hours of beaches and mountains. A
unique city, combining small town southern charm and hospitality
with big city sophistication, it offers excellent shopping and
dining, numerous parks and recreation facilities, many cultural
activities, and is a particularly favorite locale of golfers,
equestrians, and people who enjoy outdoor activities all year long.
Aiken is also a college town and home to the University of South
Carolina Aiken campus with about 3,300 students.
Originally a Winter Colony for the wealthy northern sporting enthusiasts,
Aiken is now one of the country's most important equestrian centers
with facilities for trail riding, fox hunting, polo and year-round
training of race horses and sport horses of all disciplines. The
largest urban forest in the country, Aiken's Hitchcock Woods, is in
the heart of the town. Open to pedestrians and equestrians alike,
its 2000+ acres are laced with more than 65 miles of pine scented,
sandy trails.
Aiken also boasts a regional medical center with private rooms and open
heart surgery capabilities. It is served by airports in both
Columbia, South Carolina and nearby Augusta, Georgia.
